Bill C-525 An attack on our ability to organize and maintain our membership

Fightback #1

Bill C-525: An attack on our ability to organize and maintain our membership

Who: The Harper government acting through Tory backbencher Blaine Calkins, the MP for

the riding of Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

What: Bill C-525

  • Currently federal law allows for card-check certification
  • This Bill would require a vote for all federal certifications
  • 45% sign-up required for a vote
  • All votes for certification and decertification would require the unions to receive a majority of the votes of all bargaining unit members to be certified or to maintain certification. Anyone not voting counts as a vote against the union!

Why: This is part of a larger Conservative strategy to weaken and ultimately destroy unions

When: The Bill was introduced on June 6, 2013 and will move forward during the fall session

             of Parliament

Where: Federal jurisdiction

How: The Tories are using Private Member’s Bills to avoid accountability and transparency.

When the government introduces legislation, it is required to justify, explain and

defend it in Parliament. However, through Private Member’s Bills they can avoid

accountability and transparency.
